ABOUT THE APS NET ZERO UNIT


The APS Net Zero Unit is based in Canberra and Perth, as part of the Property and Construction Division in the Department of Finance.

The Unit works across the Department and with all other Commonwealth entities and Commonwealth companies more broadly to deliver on the Government's commitments.


The APS Net Zero Unit is responsible for developing policy requirements to enable the Australian Public Service to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2030, and to transparently report on its emissions.

The Unit is also responsible for leading the Commonwealth Climate Disclosure reform.


ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY**You will be part of a team driving and delivering climate action in Australian Government operations.

The APS Net Zero Unit is responsible for:

  • Leading the implementation of the Government's target for the Australian Public Service to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, which is part of Australia's 2030 emissions reduction target under the Paris Agreement
  • Setting the framework and supporting emissions accounting for individual Commonwealth entities, and producing the wholeofgovernment emissions report
  • Leading the Commonwealth climate disclosure reform.


APS 5 and APS 6 senior policy officers in the APS Net Zero Unit will have a real, tangible impact on the above-mentioned initiatives by leading key activities.

There are multiple roles available across the APS Net Zero Unit, requiring different types of skillsets and experiences.

Responsibilities, depending on experience and expertise could include, supporting the:


  • Implementation of the APS net zero emissions reduction target in affected Commonwealth entities
  • Development of the Commonwealth climate disclosure requirements, and associated verification and assurance regime
  • Collation and analysis of greenhouse gas emissions data
  • Drafting the wholeofgovernment greenhouse gas emissions report and refinement of the emissions accounting framework
  • Building of capability and supporting ontheground implementation of the three initiatives, including delivering appropriate communications
  • Supporting governance arrangements for the three initiatives
  • Provision of advice to the Minister, and Senior Executive, and alignment with associated reforms internal and external to the Department of Finance, including international forums.


Regardless of your final role, working in the APS Net Zero Unit will offer high profile, cross-agency exposure, on leading climate policy.

You will develop comprehensive skills in policy design, stakeholder engagement, communication, whole-of-government frameworks and Cabinet processes.

You will work with staff from across the Commonwealth to increase awareness of and build capability to support net zero target implementation, greenhouse gas emissions accounting and climate disclosure.
