The NEW NERDS DRONE ON
The Australian Army has embraced the future and created the Australian Army Drone Racing Team (ADRT).
The ADRT competes in organised events around the country and with international military forces with members
drawn from various Regular and Reserve units.
The Australian Army has seen that the next thrilling motor sport is Drone Racing.
To compete against the many civilian and military sporting clubs that are emerging, they have formed the Australian Army Drone Racing Association, (ADRA) and the Australian Army Drone Racing Team (ADRT).
The Australian Army Drone Racing Association (ADRA) is an Army sporting association that enables Army personnel to participate in a sport regardless of rank, geographic location or physical capabilities. It is focused on innovation and modernisation through the development and employment of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and First Person View (FPV) technology.
To become a member, you need to be a full time or part time member of the Army and demonstrate your skills at drone racing and constructing racing drones. You also need to have a friendly, competitive spirit.
They are always looking for new members for their association and for their team.
So if you are an Australian Army Regular or Reservist and think you have what it takes to be an Army Drone Racer,
check out the ADRT Facebook page and apply.
Competition Classes
In order to help the sport progress, various divisions for racing have been devised as part of the constitution for ADRA. They are:
Super Class: For the fastest pilots with the highest level racing skillset
Division A: For fast pilots
Division B: For medium speed flying / medium skill-level pilots
Division C: For beginners or visitors and those still learning the sport.
Safety
In order for an aircraft to be approved for racing it must be able to do the following:
1. The Aircraft MUST go to zero throttle in the event the failsafe mode is triggered
2. The aircraft MUST go into a disarmed state.
3. The failsafe mode MUST be activated within five (5) seconds of the radio link being terminated (cut) with the aircraft.
There are also a number of civilian regulations that must be adhered to in order for a competitor to compete.
These overarching regulatory bodies include:
The Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA)
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA - that controls radio frequencies)
The Model Aircraft Association of Australia.
If safety cannot be assured or regulations cannot be adhered to, competition will not proceed.
Competitions
Competitions are held around Australia and internationally.
The inaugural Military International Drone Racing Tournament (MIDRT) will be held in historic Victoria Barracks in Sydney during October, 2018.
For more details visit the MIDRT Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MIDRT or email midrt.australia@defence.gov.au .
It will be interesting to see how the two worlds meet in the air !
