People have told me things ever since I can remember.

People have told me things ever since I can remember.

In response to Why People Tell Me Things   Amy Blaschka    LI UPLOADED 09/02/2016

People have told me things ever since I can remember.
When I wanted a new career, I decided to use this and became a psychologist.

Rapport counts for approx 80% of success with enabling clients regardless of what brand of therapy is used. I think having a "trusting face" is being non threatening and genuinely empathetic. I am short, roundish not skinny, female with a symmetrical pleasing but not beautiful face with lots of freckles. Definitely non threatening  ! This is a great help with establishing rapport.

In a new interpersonal situation, women tend to smile at the other person.
This is a legacy of fight or flight and indicates "I am not going to harm you" to the other person. I thought this idea was a silly bit of research so I observed what happened with others and I tried it. Try it and see what happens !

Listening is important but so is asking challenging questions in the right way at the right time. Sometimes knowing something about another person even as mundane as their shopping list can backfire.
The person may perceive a power imbalance and feel exposed and vulnerable. In a workplace this can lead to difficult interpersonal situations or bullying. Consider choosing carefully who you listen to.

Consequently, people confide in strangers for many good reasons. See Why is it Easier to Talk to Strangers

Often it’s as simple as right place – right time !
A major plus is you will probably never see the other person again so are not likely to be reminded of your lapse or weakness.  It’s not known to those close to you so there's no chance of negative comeback.
It's a new take of Stranger No Danger !

What are your experiences?

Agree Louise Smith, many are too aggressive vs. being assertive and compassionate. Thanks for sharing this.

Yes Franci Hoffman unfortunately the modern world is becoming more aggressive. So people tend to hunker down, stick in their own comfort zones and not question. This can leave them wide open to exploitation and bullying. So with a lack of wider social group, they feel "stuck". They don't set personal boundaries and often get ill with stress, anxiety, depression and other severe mental health issues.

ha Ha Ha HA HA HA Kevin Pashuk ! I agree. I can tell a lot from a person's profile pic! I like natural pic not the studio ones. I like the ones where the person has an easy smile just like yours!

I agree Louise Smith, it is better to approach with a smile and in a non-threatening manner. Your post got me thinking about many people's profile pics, which make it look like the photographer was their dentist who took the shot while rev'ing up the drill.
