Ode to the Apostrophe

Ode to the Apostrophe

I look like a comma, but please don't be fooled,

I am my own symbol, though oft times misruled,

I have many uses, and still hope that one day,

I'll be better studied by all and by sundry.

------------------------------------------------------

Some try to abuse me, and without apology,

But I've sought advice, in clinical psychology,

So now I stand tall, and don't suffer fools,

Who just won't conform to grammatical rules.

-------------------------------------------------------

Don't = Do not
Can't = Cannot
Shouldn't = Should not

--------------------------------------------------------

First I'm a 'bring-in', when letters abort,

Or go on vacation, a trip long or short,

Don't, Can't and Shouldn't, exemplify this,

When O's got to go, I'm in, never miss.

--------------------------------------------------------

What's = What is
How's = How is
He'll = He will
She'll = She will
We'll = We will

--------------------------------------------------------

Don't think I'm negative, don't put me down,

What's and How's that, make me talk of the town,

He'll, She'll and We'll, all promise to do,

But I have the Will, to follow them through.

--------------------------------------------------------

Mike's bikes, Mum's thumbs and Millie's chillies?
or
Too many Mikes, Mums and Millies?

--------------------------------------------------------

When I team up with my good friend the 'S',

That's when you'll find that I'm keen to possess,

Mike's, Mum's and Millie's, show just what they own,

Without me they're plurals, a multiple clone.

----------------------------------------------------------

It's = It is; but is not possessive
Its = belongs to it

----------------------------------------------------------

One word of caution, when I join with it,

It's ain't possessive, but short for it is

Exceptional its is one you can't miss,

It is its own master, so don't take the piss.

----------------------------------------------------------

Some say I'm snooty, and look down on others,

But I connect letters, my sisters and brothers,

I'd much rather say, that I stand proud and tall,

Follow my rules, and we'll all have a ball.

-----------------------------------------------------------

So I've shot my powder, that's it from me,

Love me or hate me, I'm hard not to see,

I hope now you'll find, I'm a real handy tool,

So use me more often, because I'm real cool.

Thanks, Claire, but ..... Roadie and Brodie rhyme well it would seem, And roadies move gear like a well oiled machine, But Boddie is different, the vowel sounds like jaw, My name rhymes with toddy, a drink without flaw. 🥃 🤗

Glad you enjoyed this, Tangela, but ..... My old mate, ‘Apo’, is bouncy and bright, If you use him wisely he’ll beam with delight, But were he to hear you suggest grammar’s “dull”, He’d quickly retreat and your friendship anul. 😥

'Apo' just dropped by, Susan \ud83d\udc1d Rooks, the Grammar Goddess. He's never really far away and is a regular visitor when I'm writing. We both get a laugh at how often he's misused and abused by people with good intentions. That's when he curls up with laughter and looks his best. He's really quite social and hooks up regularly with his girlfriend, 'Dot'. She's a bit of a bossy boots and stands over him from her favourite overbearing position. Together they run an introductory service for individual clauses who are looking for a connection. Dot says she'd much rather pair up with Apo than her twin brother, who, when left alone, is a periodic terminator. Her brother is always looking to fire off bullets when they are together, but when there's not much writing action, she says they both feel so listless. Apo would write to you himself, Susan, but his eyesight isn't too good and he's a little nervous about talking to a "grandma godless". 😂
OMG on steroids, Ken Boddie! That is just marvelous and so funny! Love it and sharing it everywhere!

'Apo' wants to know, Randy, what's on the chef's special, as he believes the chef's special. 💬

I am privileged to be able to provide you with refreshment, Kev, but am aggrieved to discover that Dad jokes are oft-times considered less than excellent. I've always thought of them like a ripe cheese, which, having matured with age and kept cool under a damp cloth, can be sampled repeatedly. This all goes to prove that an old cheesy joke can still be palatable, provided it's well dressed. 🧀

In response to my challenge to share earlier works by beBee authors... I wanted to refresh one of my favourites by my down-under poet and purveyor of bad Dad jokes... Ken Boddie

Thought you might appreciate the combo, Susan. Incidentally, I have used Kevin Pashuk's "worst enema" line many times since this buzz was produced, but always crediting him with the original. After all, I don't want people to think my dad jokes are inferior, do I? I'm quite happy to let Kev take the fall.

Kevin Pashuk, you took the last picture here very literally, didn't you . . . :-)
Humor AND correctness, all in one package, Ken Boddie! Thank you for showing me this post of yours!

I know what you mean Ken Boddie, autocorrect is my worst enema.

Ken Boddie

7 years ago #28

Ahhhh things were certainly different then, before the "digital rage". Those were the days when we pondered over a special handwritten note of thanks, before committing pen to paper, Life was also delightfully slower and simpler before that damned autocorrect kicked in and we hit "spend too spoon". 😂 I should be more careful of what I say, as 'autocorrect' is a distant cousin of 'Apo'. 😐 #40

Grazie mille, Praveen. Avo remembers fondly when people used pens and gave him variety to his character. 🖋 He is sad that they now mostly use keyboards and punch him too hard. 👇 #37

Apo is quite overwhelmed with all these shares. He sends his thanks, Franci Eugenia Hoffman. HIs tears of joy are soaking the paper and turning him into a semi-colon. ☂

Ken Boddie

HI, Franci Eugenia Hoffman. Apo also says 'hi'. He reads you poems and loves them. 👀#25

Ken Boddie

Ahhhh, Mamen Delgado, you have made Apo blush profusely. He gets excited so easily at his age and has gone for a lie down to recover from the palpitations you have unwittingly given him❣️#22

Apo's really quite old, Kevin Pashuk, even older than you and I put together. He therefore doesn't date anymore, but still has an eye for the ladies. 👁 #20

Apo is the clever one, of course, Dean Owen. He says hi and thanks but he's really afraid of needles. 👀 #19

Our Apo'llonian friend has the classical beauty, I'd love to meet him sometime but for fun not for duty. I've heard he is tiny and shy and for me it is all right, here I stay looking forward a moment under the moonlight. 😍

You've been sneaking your "Smartie" pills again Ken Boddie. Very clever. The only advice I would add is that one should never date an apostrophe... they can be possessive.

Dean Owen

This is very clever. Thought that was Mr. Potato Head. I hope this is the first in a series - the last being the accent aiguille! (Now there is a challenge!)

I just caught Apo blushing, Lada Prkic, CEng. I think he's a little shy of the ladies. So thanks on his behalf. 👀 #13
