It's a New Take - Stranger No Danger !

db965482.jpg
People have told me things ever since I can remember. It's one of the reasons I decided to become a psychologist.

Rapport counts for approx 80% of success regardless of what brand of therapy is used. I think having a "trusting face" is being non threatening & genuinely empathetic.  I am a short, roundish female with a symmetrical pleasing face with lots of freckles - definitely non threatening!

In a new interpersonal situation, women tend to smile at the other person. This is a legacy of fight or flight and indicates "I am not going to harm you" to the other person. I thought this idea was a silly bit of research so I observed what happened with others & I tried it. Try it and see what happens !

Listening is important but so is asking challenging questions at the right time. People often confide in strangers for many good reasons. Often it’s as simple as being in the same place at that time.  A major plus is you will probably never see the other person again .

It's a new take - Stranger No Danger !

It happens to me a lot !

Thank you Zacharias From a very young age, I accepted people I met as they were. If they did something that I considered to be outside my idea of acceptable behaviour, I reevaluated my opinion and whether I wanted to be associated with them. But I started from a neutral perspective and listened and tried to understand them. This is the basis of a potentially good client-therapist relationship. So part Nature and part Nurture set me on my career path firstly as a Teacher and now as a Psychologist.

That's quite profound actually. We attract the things we have inside us and if we replace this fear of strangers with a genuine kindness (or at least a feeling of comfort towards these strangers) we may be surprised at the effect this can have to our everyday experience. Thank you for sharing this profound post!
