Dreams to Sell, Fine Dreams to Sell

Dreams to Sell, Fine Dreams to Sell

a4c12ce5.jpg

And so the cycle of life begins. Young Hudson was born at 8.31am on a Thursday.

Although the sudden transition from the warmth of the womb to the bright lights and fuzzy faces of a brave new world can be a rude awakening for some, the die has been cast and, for this young son, nephew, grandson and great grandson, life will start in relative peace and comfort.

35e1beb6.jpg

For Hudson will start his journey with good health and, compared to many others, relative wealth and a clean environment.  He was born into a society and land where food, clothing, clean water, medical treatment, education, blue skies and fresh air are taken for granted.

Many born into today's world are less fortunate, as the 'Bard' expressed in the now famous Selkirk Grace, more than two hundred years ago .

Some hae meat and canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it,
But we hae meat and we can eat,
Sae let the Lord be Thanket!
Robert Burns
As I look into my grandchild's eyes, I 'remember' the questions that will come, as they did with my children, all in good time:

  • the why's, the where's, the what's;
  • the easily answered, the less easy;
  • the simplicity of children's logic, with still unlearned bias;
  • the optimism in their view of tomorrow, undampened by life's "outrageous fortune" or by "man's inhumanity to man".

Our 'race of humanity' commenced by passing the batten to a relay team of successive elite from each new generation; each batten holder fitter, healthier, smarter and faster than the generation before.

At the start of the 'human race', each batten holder could safely say, hand on heart, that:

The world is now a better place for our children, and our children's children, than it was for us.

So why have recent generations dropped the batten?

When did individual greed overcome collective need?

When did we encourage Mother Nature to mortgage her property, then lead her towards bankruptcy?

Will the dreams we sell our children, and our children's children, achieve for them a better world than the world we ourselves have left for them?

Congrats new Granddad! He is beautiful. I love the Scottish lullaby and the message contained within. I have hope for the future generations because so many now having children are thinking globally for their children's sake and also seem to going back to a time that I remember- teaching respect for elders, love for humanity over materialism and so much more. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful time in your lives. I had tears (happy ones) reading this and seeing the photos. We are on the road (well not literally, now), in a hotel for night but we will arrive to see our grandboys in 3 days, it's been almost a year. I can relate to the questions they ask so innocently and I also have time to understand the innocence so much more now that I'm not raising kids. Can't put a price tag on that! Have fun with your new grandson :))

Your Canon pun got me fired up, Kev. Got me thinking that it's a good job we aren't all photographers 'cause mucking about in a dark, to see what develops, could lead to a population explosion. 👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻

I have a feeling that wee one will be 'Canon'ized... (as opposed to Nikoned in my case) by his Grandfather's photos. It could be argued that there is no greater calling, or joy, in being a Grandpa. Congrats to the whole Boddie clan with the welcoming of Hudson into their midst.

Who is this saintly white-clad high roller with the massive cheroot, and what have you done with my buddy Dean Owen? Wait one ..... I recognise those failed attempts at humour. Where have you been, Dean-san? I thought perhaps your last blog had been considered admissible evidence for permanent incarceration?

That makes two of us on the same wavelength, Deb, concerning the future of our planet. Now all we have to do is convince the other 7.4 billion or so.

Thank you, Fatima. Young Hudson obviously takes his looks from the female side of the family. I'll pass on your 'hugs' to him tomorrow. I'm sure he'll appreciate them, as he already has an eye for the ladies, although, to be more precise, at this early stage, he only focuses on a specific region between the neck and the midriff. 🤣

Thanks for your kind comment, Vincent., although I'm not too sure we're ready for another language to confuse our terminology. Being a family of diverse origins, we are already listing the possibilities of nomenclature in various combinations of Australian Strine, Broad Scots, Italian and Indonesian. 🤔

What can we do, Pascal, but guide them through life's minefields and trust that they'll make their own mistakes with minimal collateral damage. As for "Son of Hudde", good Anglo-Saxon origins, although I'm sure that Amanda and husband Mark will both agree that Hudde had absolutely nothing to do with it. 🤣

What better way to guide our future back to the light, Pak Paul, than with sage humour, punctuated with a liberal dose of 'grand' dad-jokes. I do agree, however, that poor puns punish the proletariat. 🤣

Ken Boddie Congratulations Ken! May Angus follow in granddad's steps: a traveller, a photographer, adventurer, a wordsmith, and an all round gentleman. A beautifully written piece - which I hope you will save for when he is old enough to read.

You make some fair points, Manjit. Let's hope that an improved digital access to data enables our offspring to heed the many lessons that history has to offer, and not to repeat them more efficiently.

If peace is the greatest gift, Lada, then a healthy environment must be a close second. Without either there is no future. Thanks for your kind thoughts and wishes.

Family is number one in my book, congratulations Ken on the arrival of your grandson. Unlike you and me Young Hudson will have his entire life mapped in media and digital record. That is the great change for this new generation. I am optimistic that in the long-term this digital record will provide enough awareness to move us to a better world, but in the short-term we have to get through challenges. These challenges become more meaningful and purposeful when we appreciate who we are passing the torch to and how that informs our present legacy. Wonderful news Ken, success to me is not a seven letter word, it is about making a better world knowing that what we write here joins the digital record, which for future kids is a way of being.

Dear Ken, congratulations on the arrival of your grandson and a great joy to hold in your arms!! I really hope that the world will be a better place for our children's children than it was for us. "The greatest gift we can give to our children is to raise them in a culture of peace."
