Career Success and Life Lessons
For those of us on the "awareness and conscious living path" all of life is a chance for learning and growth. When we begin this path we are often looking for a way to fix, change or avoid our pain and misery.
So when you seem to be having a problem with your work situation what action do you take - avoid, fix or change?
Avoidance will often take us down the path of wrong action, like too much alcohol or sugary treats when we have decided to eat clean and mean to lose a few kilos. Avoidance is a form of self sabotage. Relief may be quick but the pain and misery returns quickly and is often more acute the next time around.
Fix suggests there is something wrong and that a finite remedy is going to make it go away. It's a bit like having a negative attitude, blaming it on your boss and moving jobs quickly. Yes the problem seems fixed but after a while it rears its head again as you have not fixed your bad attitude only the environment in which you live. "Fix" often only offers a temporary solution.
This is why I like to spend time with my career coaching clients doing a full 360 review of their work place and situation, because moving from the job you have to somewhere else without clearly looking at the situation, your response to it and your mindset will not bring you the desired outcomes. So why move? It's like jumping out of the aircraft with your parachute in your hand rather than on your body... you are not properly prepared for the action.
What working with many, many clients has taught me is:
How you handle the pain and misery of your work situation is a reflection of the bigger life lessons you are learning.
So are you someone who wants to deny or avoid the pain and misery in your life, or do you try to give it a quick fix or are you willing to change...
Changing yourself is your place of power. And that power begins with you. Change may take time and sustained effort to bring about. It requires regular reviews to see you're still on track.
Change happens when you do the following:
1) Becoming self aware. Are you reacting to circumstances and people or are you responding to them? Reaction is about resistance, wall building and blocking change whereas responding is about looking for solutions to problems.
2) Review your unhelpful reactions and choose to change them. You can do this in many ways.
- Learn to reconnect to your centre
- breathe more slowly
- don't let yourself be triggered by others drama and reactions.
3) Review your personal investment. Do you invest too much emotional energy in your career? Are you over attached, over identified and/or ego driven in your career and is this impacting on the effectiveness of your work or work relationships? When we want work to make up for other parts of our life that aren't working it can cause stress on our careers.
So over to you... what action are you taking? And what are you going to do about it?
I can help clarify the issue and action steps required. Contact me for details.
