    This role provides advice and support to the General Manager of the Correctional Centre to enhance safety outcomes for staff, prisoners and visitors through the Correctional Centre Local Action Plan.

    The Safety and Compliance Advisor is responsible for ensuring the centre complies with QCS legislative, Quality Assurance and Risk Management frameworks, including monitoring and developing compliance programs, reviewing policies, and advising management on risk and risk mitigation.

    The role forms part of a network of Safety and Compliance Advisors across Queensland and is responsible for working with Centre management to embed a culture of safety through promoting work practices and behaviours that positively impact the safety of staff, prisoners and visitors within the Centre.

    In this role you will:

    • Develop and maintain the Correctional Centre Local Action Plan to promote a culture of health, safety and wellbeing, including consultation and engagement with staff, reviewing and monitoring outcomes, undertaking reporting and analysis and providing advice.
    • Manage the implementation of the QCS Violence Prevention Strategy and QCS Drug Strategy within the Correctional Centre through the Local Action Plan.
    • Conduct internal reviews and audits to assess compliance or operational risks and develop risk management strategies.
    • Provide advice on operational practices to ensure compliance with relevant workplace health and safety legislative requirements and promote ongoing continuous improvement of operational practices aimed at delivering a safe environment for staff, prisoners and visitors.
    • Develop and manage processes to support staff assaulted at work and advise management on strategies to improve safety outcomes and reduce risk of assaults or harm to staff, prisoners and visitors.
    • Undertake research, benchmarking, reporting and analysis to identify risk and trends and to inform strategies and to develop best practice initiatives and innovative solutions to reduce the risk of assaults or harm to staff, prisoners and visitors.
    • Design and deliver targeted engagement strategies for assault perpetrators or those at risk, encouraging acknowledgement of their actions and seeking commitment to positive behavioural change.
    • Manage the Centre-based Violence Prevention Committee (VPC) and participate and provide advice to other forums or committees including the Use of Force reference group and Intensive Management Plan, including conducting risk management reviews of incidents and advice on strategies to mitigate risk.
    • Engage with key stakeholders, including Queensland Health, on programs to support improved safety outcomes for all persons in the correctional centre.
    • Collaborate with the HR Manager, Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator and Staff Training Coordinator about matters relating to staff safety and wellbeing and to ensure staff compliance with training and adherence with safety instruction, including use of equipment and PPE.
