Job summary

The Community Visitor Program (CVP) is an independent statutory program which aims to safeguard the rights and dignity of people being treated under the Northern Territory (NT) Mental Health and Related Services Act 1998 and Disability Services Act 1993. In this role, you will help ensure people receive quality care by visiting facilities and engaging with persons receiving mental health support or living with complex cognitive disabilities under Supervision Orders.

Responsibilities

• Conduct regular visits and inspections of facilities and residences as defined by the MHRSA and DSA, actively and empathetically engaging with persons utilising the services, some with complex needs.
• Provide advocacy and enquiry services with cultural sensitivity, respect, and empathy; aiming at lowest level resolution and respond to all phone and email enquiries with care and respect.
• Liaise with, and be guided by, the Senior Coordinator in relation to management of formal complaints and visit schedules.
• Write clear high-quality reports and assist with the development and writing of the CVP annual report.
• Assist the Senior Coordinator scheduling Sessional Community Visitors and providing assistance to Community Visitor Panels.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience supporting people experiencing mental ill health or psychological distress.
• Proven ability to act impartially and exercise good judgement and sensitivity in complex situations.
• Excellent interpersonal skills including the demonstrated ability to relate and interact with people at all levels and across diverse settings in a kind, respectful and empathetic manner.
• Proven ability to quickly establish credibility with and gain respect from service users and stakeholders.
• Highly developed oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on advocacy, aiming at low-level resolution.
• Cross-cultural awareness, understanding and knowledge.
• A team player with good IT skills, a positive can-do attitude, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Desired requirements

• Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience working with people with a complex cognitive disability.
• Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline such as social work, social science, or mental health related field.
