    About the OPPORTUNITY

    We have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer to join our 670 Hunter Class line of business based at SA Osborne Naval Shipyard, reporting to the Lead Mechanical Engineer-Auxiliary Systems (Foremast).

    We embrace flexible work arrangements at BAE Systems Australia, such as working a 9-day fortnight.

    As the Mechanical Engineer you will be responsible for providing mechanical engineering services that are accurate, safe, and to approved standards for the development or modification of mechanical equipment, systems, structures and/ or materials. The role also requires a technical interface with the broader engineering team, production, sustainment and procurement personnel and external suppliers. Mechanical Engineering services includes but is not limited to design, development, test and integration, productionisation, installing and managing the mechanical equipment against technical, schedule and cost goals.

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Participate in the design and delivery of HCF Foremast Auxiliary Systems, including the implementation of all product changes specific to the Hunter Class Frigate Design.
    • Liaise closely with industry and Commonwealth stakeholders to ensure alignment and consistency of approach and to ensure outcomes are achieved with the agreement of all key stakeholders.
    • Participate in technical analyses and investigations, including evaluation and selection of technical options, and prepare reports with suggested recommendations to support the resolution of problems and the improvement of engineering capability.
    • Work under direction within a team of engineers (3-4) to spatially integrate Foremast Auxiliary systems with the assistance of 3D modellers, resolving all physical integration issues in consultation with other equipment and system owners within the Foremast.
    • Participate in selection and procurement of major equipment required to support the Foremast Auxiliary System design, including development of technical specifications and supplier documentation review.
    • Provide accurate programme status, identify problem areas and implement agreed recovery plans.
    • Contribute to identification and closure of issues emerging from all product lifecycle stages and to manage the resulting change embodiment activities.
    • Ensure all documents and artefacts generated within own sphere of responsibility are completed and managed in accordance with appropriate standard procedures and work instructions including compliance with the required product change management and quality control process.

    About YOU

    • Hold a Mechanical, Mechatronic or Aeronautical Engineering degree and satisfy the requirements for membership of the Institute of Engineers Australia.
    • Demonstrated experience in development of simple Mechanical designs, participation in design reviews, undertaking typical design analysis and implementation of solutions, their integration, validation, qualification testing, delivery and support
    • Experience in the following technologies, design analysis techniques, development tools:
      • Design Synthesis
      • Material Selection and Material Processes
      • Machining and Fabrication
      • Thermal Design
      • Structural analysis and design
      • Statics Dynamics (e.g. Shock and Vibration/Fatigue design)
      • Design for Manufacture, Cost and Environment
      • Design for Test and Environmental Qualification
      • Mechanical Drafting
      • Motion control and mechatronics
      • Mechanism design, Control systems, Electro hydraulic systems (e.g. servo valves)
      • Ship Equipment Integration and Design

    This role can be based at in Osborne SA or Melbourne CBD with the opportunity for occasional domestic travel (5-10 trips/year) to visit customer and supplier premises and manufacturing facilities.
