    Job Description

    NBN is Nine's regional news arm, with an audience stretching across Northern New South Wales and into Queensland. It has bureaus with reporters and camera operators in the Central Coast, Tamworth, Lismore, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Taree – broadcasting out of a brand new state of the art studio and newsroom in Newcastle. NBN has been based out of Newcastle for 60 years – and is a talent pool for the broader Nine Network.

    We have casual Journalist positions available across our NBN Newsrooms. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a news team that reports on stories across a vast stretch of the state, including Newcastle, Byron Bay, the Tweed and Lennox Head. From community issues and local council matters to extreme weather, breaking news and sport – there's never a dull day on the road. Crafting stories with experienced regional camera operators in New South Wales for Nine NBN's 6pm News bulletin, the NBN website and social media pages.

    Key responsibilities include:

  • Generate, identify and react to breaking stories, issues and trends with journalistic integrity
  • Generate smart and engaging story ideas, or receive a brief from the Chief of Staff
  • Have your finger on the pulse across everything that is happening in the wider region - liaising with the team in Newcastle to ensure the best content is covered daily.
  • Work with producers in Newcastle to script and edit your story
  • Brief interviewees and conduct interviews
  • Talk clearly and directly to the camera and carry out a live cross when required
  • Record interviews in person and sometimes report live or through a studio link
  • Monitor socials and local papers
  • Deliver to tight deadlines
  • Provide innovative ideas for compelling storytelling across television and digital
  • Cultivate a strong network of contacts
  • Perform other duties such as radio interviews to promote the news bulletin as reasonably required
  • Be active on social media within NEC policy to promote the news bulletin
  • Qualifications

  • Experience in Television journalism and breaking stories
  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism or equivalent
  • Confident writing style, on-air presence and ability to package for TV news
  • Strong relationship and network building skills
  • Seamless and crisp writing and communication skills,
  • Ability to engage peers, supervisors and interviewees in active, open and productive dialogue; absorbs information and acts accordingly; is proactive in discussing solutions and raising ideas; builds strong relationships, both internally and externally
  • Knowledge in producing
  • An abundance of ideas, energy and the ability to work well as part of a team
