    About the role

    The role of the Diversional Therapist/Recreational Therapist (DT/RT) within the Mary Potter House Program is to enhance the quality of life of people with moderate to advanced dementia and their carers by providing social interaction, community support, carer education and centre-based respite in order to prevent premature admission into an aged care facility. This Program endeavours to introduce therapeutic activities to stimulate client activity in a culturally and linguistically appropriate environment.

    The DT/RT will support people in the community living with moderate to advanced dementia and their families, by delivering practical diversional therapy support to program participants.

    They will act as a pillar for professional development within the practice and will actively seek to enhance the practices, procedures and protocols that contribute to enhancing the clients' wellbeing.

    • Identify clients' needs through relevant assessments and task analysis
    • Organise, plan and implement recreation and leisure activities to promote social engagement and psychological wellbeing based on clients' needs and best evidence
    • Encourages and supports clients to take part in activities suited to their particular needs and interests
    • Works with clients to create ongoing goals and encourage them to try new activities to support them
    • Assists with personal care needs to the extent necessary to ensure clients safety, comfort and satisfactory completion of planned programs
    • Maintains knowledge of resources available within 3Bridges facilities and within the community
    • Works in collaboration with the Nurses, Leisure and Activity Support Worker, and Volunteers
    • Evaluates and assess clients' levels of abilities, interests, needs, strengths and weaknesses, and their ability to carry out a range of tasks and interact with others
    • Delivering group programs individually and as part of a multi-disciplinary team

    About You

    • You hold recognised qualification as Diversional or Recreation Therapist
    • You have a minimum of 1 year post graduate experience working with people living with dementia and their care-givers
    • You have Leisure programming experience for individuals and groups
    • You have demonstrated ability to produce high quality reports and support plans in line with under requirements
    • You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, which includes a demonstrated ability to be person-centred, and complete sensitive and responsive interactions with colleagues, clients, and external stakeholders
