Job summary

Provide a high level of operational advice in relation to Community Corrections' responsibilities, initiatives, legislation, policy and programs, including the development of policy and operational guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert policy, operational and technical advice to the Minister and executive members of Department of Corrections on all aspects of Community Corrections and issues relating to the effective management of community based offenders.
  • Maintain the currency of the templates, Offender Management Framework and other policies and guidelines, and provide expert advice to managers, trainers and operational staff on offender management and the management of risk associated with community based offenders.
  • Provide authoritative advice on the development and interpretation of legislation and regulations.
  • Maintain contemporary knowledge of current and emerging issues in the management of community based offenders to ensure operational practice within Community Corrections is consistent with best practice methods.
  • Co-ordinate the transfer process of offenders from and to other jurisdictions as per National Procedures and guidelines, and oversight the sourcing of professional reports for court.
  • Develop and maintain effective consultative and collaborative relationships across a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of the day to day operation of Community Corrections, including the relationship with the court and parole systems, and the legislation, regulations and policies impacting on the management of community based offenders.
  • Significant experience in working within a legislative framework and proven ability to interpret and apply complex legislation in a correctional services context.
  • Demonstrated experience in the identification of key risk areas in corrections operations and the application of a continuous improvement and audit framework to ensure compliance and performance.
  • Demonstrated experience in research and analysis to identify solutions to operational problems, including the preparation of reports that provide a comprehensive analysis and interpretation of the information provided.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare, review and present a range of professional correspondence and reports including ministerial correspondence.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive relationships and networks with colleagues and stakeholders in order to strategically develop and progress Community Corrections' priorities.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with people from diverse cultures, including a sound understanding of contemporary indigenous societies, cultures and sensitivities.
