    Primary objective

    To provide the Northern Territory Government, its Authorities and its Instrumentalities with high quality legal services with respect to

    Commercial matters.

    Context statement

    The Commercial Division provides strategic commercial legal advice to the Northern Territory Government, its agencies and statutory

    bodies. The division applies a whole of Government perspective to its legal advice in areas including major infrastructure projects, land

    development and management, procurement and contracts, funding agreements, mining and resources, revenue law, assessment of

    compensation for victims of crime, native title and Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act matters, and a wide range of general

    commercial matters.

    Key duties and responsibilities

    1. Provide legal advice and legal representation.

    1. Report to the Director of the Commercial Division on the progress of matters.

    2. Maintain a high level of knowledge of relevant areas of the law and of relevant practices and procedures.

    3. Provide a reliable and high level of service to clients including preparation of court documentation, correspondence and other materials.

    4. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and prepare and present legal concepts, positions or factual analyses clearly and

    correctly.

    1. Represent the Solicitor for the Northern Territory, liaise with clients and deal with people and issues in a professional manner.

    2. Organise work to manage priorities effectively and meet deadlines.

    3. Accept responsibility for the content and presentation of all documents produced.

    Selection criteria

    Essential

    1. Admission as an Australian legal practitioner and eligibility to obtain a local practising certificate.

    1. Ability to effectively negotiate and to communicate in a professional manner.

    2. Ability to reliably manage a significant file load to meet matter and client needs and deadlines.

    3. Ability to cope with pressure and to work as part of a team.

    4. Ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.

    Desirable

    1. Experience in the practice of law in relevant or related fields.

    2. Experience using knowledge of the Territory, its laws, the workings of Government and the development of legal policy in a practical

    way.

    1. Ability to organise and manage own personal legal practice.
    2. Experience using computerised file tracking and time recording systems in a legal office.
