    The Online Safety, Media and Platforms Division provides advice to the Minister for Communications on a broad range of issues and leads the development of policy and regulatory responses which:

  • Enable all Australians to connect to media and online services safely
  • Harness the economic and social benefits of media services
  • Promote Australian news, culture, community identity and media diversity to support and inform democracy and civil engagement
  • Sustain an efficient, vibrant and resilient Australian media industry.
  • We are looking for talented and enthusiastic policy professionals to fill roles in the Media Industry & Sustainability Branch and the Platforms & News Branch.

    The Media Industry & Sustainability Branch provides policy advice and delivers programs to support a diverse and sustainable media and broadcasting industry. It is responsible for the national broadcasters (ABC and SBS), delivering programs to support public interest journalism, community broadcasting and the provision of Australian content to Pacific broadcasters. It also provides policy advice on broadcasting and online gambling regulations, working closely with the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

    The Platforms & News Branch identifies emerging market policy issues relating to digital platforms, and assesses how the business models of digital platforms impact consumers and businesses. The Branch advises the Government on the delivery of quality public interest journalism to Australian communities and the sustainability of the news publishing sector. It also advises the Government on measures to combat mis- and disinformation, electoral integrity, and foreign interference in the communications, media and online services sectors.

    A Senior Policy Officer is responsible for:

  • Contributing to policy development and providing expert policy advice.
  • Developing, supporting and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Preparing a range of high-quality written materials, including correspondence, briefs and submissions.
  • Conducting comprehensive research and analysis activities in support of policy development.
  • A merit pool will be established for a period of 18 months from the date of this advertisement as a result of the selection process.

    The work of the Division deals with subject matter related to serious online harms. Parts of the Division read, talk about, and brief on objectionable content. There is also a risk of exposure to harmful online content. The department provides support and assistance to staff that work on or with such material. Staff in the Media Industry & Sustainability Branch and the Platforms & News Branch are not expected to have direct contact with this material.
