    The NSW Personal Injury Commission (Commission) is currently seeking to recruit a Legal Officer who will be responsible for providing independent, professional legal advice and legal services.

    About Us
    The Commission resolves disputes between people injured in motor accidents and workplaces in NSW, insurers and employers.

    The Commission is an independent statutory tribunal within the New South Wales justice system, committed to providing a transparent and independent dispute resolution service.

    Resolving disputes justly and efficiently in the shortest time frame is a priority for the Commission.
    We work with all parties (injured persons, insurers, and employers, where relevant) to discuss ways of achieving this.
    The Commission exercises functions in two divisions – the Motor Accidents Division and the Workers Compensation Division.

    In this role you will work within the Commission's Legal and Policy Directorate and you will be:

    Providing clear legal advice and dispute resolution services across a range of workers compensation and motor accidents' legislation, as well advising on a range of issues including dispute resolution and practice and procedure, complaints handling, Rules' Committee work, processes related to the publication of decisions and GIPA – you will also support members of the Commission in the performance of their duties.

    Providing dispute resolution services which will include decision-making (once you have settled into the role).
    Analysing and interpreting legislation and drafting documents including advice, submissions, and other court documents.

    Preparing transactional documents and policy documents to ensure accurate legal and policy advice is provided to support legal and policy processes.

    Reviewing draft and negotiate various legal and policy documents to ensure the provision of efficient and effective legal and policy services.

    Researching, instructing Crown Solicitors and other solicitors as required, and briefing counsel where appropriate.

    Assisting the Commission on a range of matters and requests for legal and policy advice to facilitate the completion of tasks and meeting critical deadlines.

    Contributing to the maintenance and updating of registers and precedent systems.

    Assisting in developing and providing guidance or training material to the business to ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory and policy requirements.

    Working within a dynamic environment of competing priorities in delivering practical, defensible, risk based legal and policy services on a diverse range of specialist issues.

    Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of relevant policy, legislation and case law while understanding and responding to diverse business needs and priorities including conveying legal and policy concepts in clear and simple language to a range of stakeholders

    Integrating a large range of technical, evidentiary, operational and policy information when analysing the legal implications of decisions and actions.


    About you:

    Do you have a current practicing certificate that qualifies you to work as a government lawyer in NSW? Note - If you allowed your certificate to lapse, however, you are eligible for a practicing certificate and could obtain it reasonably quickly, the Commission is interested in hearing from you.

    Do you have strong legislative skills and ideally, policy skills or some exposure to policy development?
    Do you have decision-making skills, exposure to decision-making or a strong interest in it?
    Can you manage competing priorities?
    Do you enjoy problem solving?
    Do you plan effectively and are you innovative?
    Are you able to follow processes while maintaining a curious approach to your work (i.e.
    you do not adopt a formulaic approach)
