    Description

    The office of Melissa McIntosh MP is seeking applications for a full-time ongoing Adviser, based in Western Sydney, NSW.

    About the position

    The responsibility of the role is to act as Adviser to the Shadow Minister on policy, parliamentary duties, and media relations.

    The key duties of the position are, but are not limited to:

    • Contribution to policy development in relation to, but not limited to energy affordability and issues affecting Western Sydney.
    • Proactively identify and develop portfolio initiatives as well as emerging challenges across the shadow portfolio areas.
    • Develop and maintain positive stakeholder relationships.
    • Media relations including preparation for media commitments, and strategic communications.
    • Speech writing and other written communications.
    • Work closely with the Opposition Leader's Office and other relevant Shadow Ministerial Offices.
    • Prepare briefing materials on policy and legislative issues.
    • Brief the Shadow Minister for Question Time, prepare materials for committee work, and other parliamentary duties.
    • Contribute to wider Coalition strategic communications on legislation and policy.
    • Proactively engage with Coalition Members, Senators and staff.
    • This role requires Canberra travel for sitting weeks and additional travel requirements according to Shadow Portfolio duties.
    • Other duties as directed.

    The ideal applicant should possess the following skills, qualifications, and experience:

    • Previous experience as a ministerial level adviser highly regarded.
    • Experience in the energy sector and knowledge of Western Sydney would be highly regarded.
    • High level media relations experience.
    • Political campaign experience a plus, in addition to managing staff in a fast paced environment.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to shape and influence outcomes.
    • A demonstrated ability to build productive and trusted professional relationships with a range of stakeholders.
    • The ability to think strategically and manage competing priorities in a dynamic, fast paced work environment.
    • Well-developed office IT skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and the Microsoft Office suite.
    • Excellent attention to detail, record keeping, organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise and manage competing work tasks and deliver to agreed deadlines.
    • High level of professionalism, confidentiality, and discretion; and
    • A demonstrated ability to work autonomously and with initiative.

    Employment conditions:

    The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement which include:

    • A commencing salary between $101,701 and $143,379 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills
    • An additional optional allowance may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work
    • Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements)
    • An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.

    An initial probationary period of three months will apply and may be subject to extension.

    The successful applicant may be required to undergo a National Police History Check.
