    Provide specialist urban design and built form input into the preparation, implementation, assessment and review of strategic planning and design frameworks, design guidelines, planning policies and strategies to achieve better design outcomes in Hume.


    What you'll be doing:
    Assist in the preparation of strategic planning and urban design guidance for activity centres and residential and employment areas.

    Participate in and, where directed, lead the review and development of new strategic planning frameworks, urban design and master planning frameworks, design guidelines, local policies and strategies.

    Undertake built form testing to develop robust planning policy and design guidance to achieve a higher standard of design outcomes in Hume.

    Provide high level urban design and built form input into the preparation of planning scheme amendments.

    Provide high level urban design and built form advice to inform Council's projects where required and the assessment of any referred planning permit proposals to achieve a higher standard of urban design outcomes and compliance with the Hume Planning Scheme and relevant urban design policies and reference documents.

    Work with colleagues in City Planning and Places and participate in cross-departmental working/project groups to build urban design knowledge and capacity across the division.

    Support the Manager and Coordinator to promote and increase the level of awareness about good urban design and promotion of design excellence with Councillors, staff in the organisation, developers, and the community.

    The skills and experience you'll bring to the role:
    Tertiary qualification in urban design, architecture or related discipline.

    Experience in the assessment and guidance of development proposals and urban design and built form scenarios at a range of spatial scales and degrees of complexity.

    An understanding of urban renewal and greenfield/growth area contexts is highly desirable.

    High-level design analysis skills, including the ability to critique development proposals and, where necessary, develop practical and robust alternative approaches to achieve high level urban design and built form outcomes.

    Experience in contributing to strategic planning and urban design frameworks, policies and strategies to facilitate high level urban design and built form outcomes.

    Experience in contributing to submissions to Planning Panels Victoria and VCAT is highly desirable.

    Experience in liaison with colleagues from a range of disciplines or designers/planners from other organisations on projects where high level urban design and built form input is required.

    Demonstrated knowledge of urban design principles and substantial experience in technical proficiency to implement these principles in practice at a variety of spatial scales to achieve high level urban design and built form outcomes.

    Demonstrated experience in developing robust urban design and built form policy and design guidance to facilitate high level design outcomes.
