    The Senior Policy Officer – Treaty plays a key role in supporting DEECA to participate in the Treaty process and delivering on Government's commitments to First Peoples self-determination and reform.

    You will be playing a lead role for DEECA in Statewide Treaty preparation, readiness and negotiations. You will engage across the organisation to understand consequences and test options, coordinating and participating in working groups and other governance forums. You will also coordinate implementation of Whole-of-Victorian Government processes for engagement with the First People's Assembly of Victoria, supporting staff across DEECA to consider Treaty in their work and prepare briefings, as required.

    The position requires strong policy and analytical skills; critical thinking and problem solving capabilities; clear and effective communication, including in writing for government; and an ability to influence and work collaboratively with stakeholders – and a flexible and adaptable approach. A high level of cultural capability and awareness is required including an understanding of Victoria's Aboriginal Self-Determination policy, legislation, and reform agenda.

    Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications

    • Cultural capability: Demonstrated knowledge of policies and legislation relevant to First Peoples rights and interests in Victoria (e.g. Treaty, Self-Determination); demonstrated awareness of self-determination and cultural sensitivity. Experience engaging with First Peoples and Victorian Traditional Owners is an advantage.

    This is a fixed term position available for a period of 2 years. The work location for this position is 8 Nicholson Street, East Melbourne with hybrid work arrangements available.
