Job description

Mackay Regional Council is looking for an experienced Rates and Services Officer to join our Rates and Revenue Services Team on a temporary full-time basis to 29 January 2028.

This position is responsible for understanding and interpreting property and land information, relevant legislation and regulations, financial policies and adopted rates and charges to determine and assign general rates, utility and water charges. This is done to raise charges accurately and lawfully in the billing module of the property and rating system.

This role must havethe ability to confidently understand and apply knowledge of Council's financial policies and rating structures, Local Government statutory regulations, established guidelines, procedures, methods and practices pertaining to property rates and charges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain the integrity of Council databases in accordance with council policies, relevant legislation and regulations, including but not limited to;
  • Processing land database adjustments
  • Updating rate and utility charges
  • Maintaining the name and address register
  • Processing of rate and water certificates
  • Maintain portal for electronic delivery of notices.
  • Provide high level of administrative support to internal and external stakeholders, to maintain service standards and meet Council objectives.
  • Respond to general enquiries across all communication channels, ensuring prompt, accurate and professional responses.
  • Apply policy to rates and services processes as required by relevant legislation and acts.
  • Contribute to an environment of continuous improvement, including providing input into the development and review of procedures and processes across the function.
  • Contribute to achieving team objectives, work effectively as a team member and provide assistance to other team members as necessary to contribute a multi skilled environment.

About You

  • Proven experience in an administrative support position, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team environment. Actively contributes to team development through cross-skilling initiatives .
  • Knowledge or ability to quickly acquire knowledge of Council's property, rating, and water billing system modules, including property, rates, name and address, procedures, guidelines, and statutory regulations within Local Government.
  • Developing ability to deal with difficult situations, clearly articulate issues, negotiate outcomes and resolve problems, with an attitude to take personal responsibility for promptly handling and resolving workplace tasks
  • Sound time management skills including the ability to set individual operational priorities, schedule resources and organise work.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work environments and/or conditions while maintaining a positive attitude and a commitment to continuous improvement.
