    About the role

    Individually constituted Medical Panels provide procedurally fair, timely opinions and reasons in relation to questions referred pursuant to Victorian workers' compensation legislation and the Wrongs Act 1958 (Vic).

    The Senior Legal Advisor supports Medical Panels to be independent, fair and timely when answering medical questions relating to workers' compensation and personal injury law. They provide legal and policy advice to the Convenor and individual Medical Panels. Key accountabilities include but are not limited to;

    • Providing expert legal and policy advice to the Convenor and individual Medical Panels
    • Reviewing Medical Panel opinions, determinations and reasons for compliance with law
    • Providing effective and genuine leadership through effective coaching and mentoring of Legal Advisors, aligning with the organisational values and goals
    • Identifying emerging policy issues potentially affecting Medical Panels and developing and recommends appropriate responses
    • Liaising with the legal profession on matters relating to Medical Panel process and outcomes
    • Making appropriate recommendations with respect to progressing referrals

    About you

    You are an experienced Legal Advisor who wants to make a difference. You have demonstrated ability to work in a small team within a sensitive environment and subject to close public scrutiny. You possess excellent communication skills both written and oral and have an ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders. You will also have;

    • High level of experience and demonstrated superior technical legal knowledge of the Accident Compensation Act 1985, the Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2013 and
    • Wrongs Act 1958 as they relate to Medical Panels, medical questions, dispute resolution and referrals to Medical Panels.
    • A strong technical knowledge of AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment (4th Edition).
    • Demonstrated highly developed analytical and conceptual abilities including the ability to detect patterns and similarities in cases in order to advise Medical Panels towards consistent and fair outcomes.
