    Job Description

    The Research Fellow position involves contributing to one or more areas of research within the Cities Research Institute. The Research Fellow will work within the research group of the Director of the Cities Research Institute / Coastal and Marine Research Centre.

    The Research Fellow will contribute to risk management and decision-making strategies in the face of tropical cyclones impacting coastal Queensland. In this collaborative role, you'll contribute to the development of a decision support system aimed at bolstering emergency and disaster management efforts. Partnering with esteemed organisations such as Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, GeoScience Australia, Bureau of Meteorology, and the Department of Environment and Science, you'll play a pivotal role in addressing the challenges posed by extreme wind and storm tide inundation.

    This role is responsible for;

  • Engaging in meticulous research and fieldwork activities aligned with the strategic objectives of the Institute, fostering innovation and contributing to the advancement of knowledge.
  • Cultivating a distinguished publication record, demonstrating a commitment to the sharing of research findings with the broader academic community.
  • Contributing to the Institutes research initiatives. Providing mentorship to higher degree research candidates and manage a team of Research Assistants and Technical Staff to ensure project success.
  • This is a full time, fixed term (12 months) position and will be primarily based at the Griffith University Gold Coast campus. As Griffith is a multi-campus University you may be required to work across other campus locations.

    Griffith University's campuses are located on the lands of the Yugarabul, Yuggera, Jagera, Turrbal, Yugambeh and Kombumerri peoples.

    Salary Range
    The full time equivalent base salary will be Research Fellow, Grade 1 range $84,830 - $99,367 per annum + 17% superannuation. The total FTE package will be in the range $99,251 - $116,259 per annum.

    You will also have:

  • Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field or extensive research-oriented experience in the field(s) of coastal engineering, coastal management, coastal oceanography and/or flooding.
  • Demonstrated experience in understanding dynamics of shorelines and coastal ocean processes.
  • Demonstrated experience in coastal process modelling (eg. XBeach, SWAN, DELFT3D, MIKE 21/3).
  • Demonstrated experience in coding (Matlab or Python)
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake research and work under broad direction only and exercise initiative in undertaking responsibilities and work effectively with Chief Investigators.
  • Experience working with Geographic Information Systems (ArcMap, QGIS, or equivalent). {Desirable}
