    We are Australia's national institution for leadership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research.

    What we do We care for a priceless collection, including films, photographs, video, and audio recordingsas well as the world's largest collection of printed and other resource materials for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies.

    We undertake and encourage scholarly,ethical, community-based research in a variety of sectors, including health, native title,languages, and education.
    Our publishing house, Aboriginal Studies Press, regularlypublishes outstanding writing that promotes Australian Indigenous cultures.

    Our activities affirm and raise awareness of the richness and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories.

    Our functions are established under the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait

    These functions are to:

    • provide access to a national collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
    culture and heritage.

    • use that national collection to strengthen and promote knowledge and
    understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.

    provide leadership in the fields of:
     Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research; and activities relating to collections associated with Aboriginal and Torres Strait

    Islander peoples; and use (including use for research) of that nationalcollection and other collections containing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.


    • lead and promote collaborations and partnerships among the academic,research, non-government, business and government sectors and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in support of the otherfunctions of the Institute.
    • provide advice to the Commonwealth on the situation and status of Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.

    About the Group
    The Collections Services Group is responsible for the development, management, andpreservation of the AIATSIS Collection.
    The Group manages, describes, preserves, and digitisesthe AIATSIS Collection.
    About the Program Area The Collection Management Program sits within the Collection Services Group.
    Collection Management consists of the Archival Collections (Audiovisual, Photographic and Manuscript)and Collection Transformation units.

    Key operational activities of the program includecataloguing, accessioning, and describing the AIATSIS Audiovisual, Photographic and Manuscript collections to enhance discoverability of, and access to, these collections for all Australians.

    The Program is also responsible for delivering the Collection Transformationprogram which aims to reshape the work of Collection Services Group through new collectionsystems, workflows, and processes.

    Collection Management works closely with Collection Development and Care, Collection Preservation and Digitisation, and Collection Access teamsto support the discoverability and accessibility of the AIATSIS collection for all Australians.

    About the Role Assistant Directors are key leadership positions within the Collection Services Group and workcollaboratively with each other to achieve the goals of the program and the organisation, inparticular to make the AIATSIS collection discoverable and accessible in culturally appropriateways.

    The Collections Transformation Program (CTP) is an ambitious program oforganisational change to facilitate improved description, management, and accessibility of the AIATSIS Collections.

    To deliver this change the CTP has five work packages: people, standards,processes, data, and systems.

    Given the wide impact of these work packages the CTP willliaise with internal and external stakeholders to successfully deliver the project objectives.

    Asignificant focus for the Program is the procurement and implementation of a Collection Management System, and a Digital Asset Management System.

    The Assistant Director is responsible for the management and operations of the Collection Transformation Program.

    The role manages a small team and is responsible for programgovernance including reporting on program deliverables to senior management and Council.

    The position will manage the procurement of new collection systems, and ongoingengagement with staff, vendors, and other program stakeholders.
    This position reports to the Director, Collection Management.
    This EL1 role is in an important leadership position in the stewardship of the archivalcollections held at AIATSIS.
    As such, it incorporates aspects from each of the Knowing, Doingand Being sections of the Cultural Capabilities Framework.

    • proven ability to sensitively engage with, and demonstrate an understanding of, clientswho are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, including understanding Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property Rights and the interests of Indigenous peoples.
    • demonstrated ability to manage a significant transformation program ideally within alibrary, archive, gallery, museum, or other collecting institution.
    • demonstrated experience in project management including delivery of project objectivesand drafting and maintaining project documentation.
    • strong liaison, interpersonal, and communication skills, including the ability to buildrelationships across a range of professional and disciplinary areas.
    • demonstrated ability to manage change, competing priorities and strategic directions,with the ability to deliver high quality projects and outcomes, as well as the ability todeal with uncertainty positively and flexibly.
    • experience working with systems, data, and standards in an archival or library contextis highly desirable.
