    About us

The School of Engineering and Built Environment encompasses a comprehensive research environment with a broad network of specialists across engineering, aviation and architectural fields. It fosters a culture where we empower future generations to deliver creative and intelligent solutions that aim to tackle the challenges of the 21st century, and we are looking for qualified and motivated individuals for PhD scholarship positions.

One of Griffith's strategic goals are to also increase the proportion of women in senior academic and administrative roles and in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM). The School of Engineering and Buil Environment would encourage women in STEM to apply.

The successful PhD candidate will also be associated with Griffith University's Advanced Design and Manufacturing Technologies (ADaPT) Institute. ADaPT research is unique by breaking down barriers between silo disciplines, and research collaborators to identify and provide solutions that integrate expertise in engineering, design, sciences and medical fields to enable product development and services that are valued by industry partners. Our associated research projects centre on bespoke instrumentation and class-leading equipment in advanced manufacturing, enabling problem-solving in a manner unlike most other academic research environments.

    Job Description

Bone responds to its mechanical environment, which is determined by muscle forces and interaction with the world. Loss of bone quality is associated to underloading, affecting ageing individuals, people returning from space flight, and people with paralysis. While it is not possible to perform in vivo measures of stress and strain applied to bone, computational modeling and simulation can be used to better understand the effect of exercise and rehabilitation on bone health and bone adaptation. This project focuses on the development of human in the loop computational models, with the aim of controlling non-invasive bionic devices to optimise the mechanical environment of bones.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about technology in rehabilitation, specifically human biomechanics, rehabilitation devices, and robotics. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply, however knowledge and skills relating to: mechanical, mechatronics, system, or robotics engineering; programming knowledge in C++ and python; and knowledge of finite element analysis will be highly regarded.

This scholarship is housed within the BioSpine research project, which aims to develop technologies to restore mobility and sensation for individuals with spinal cord injury. The candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians and will have the opportunity to participate in the development of cutting-edge technology.
