    Are you passionate about coastal processes, coastal hazards, data management and information security? We are looking for a motivated, experienced and professional person to lead the Data Management and Information Security team within the Queensland Government Hydraulics Laboratory (QGHL).As a Principal Scientist, you will lead a small team of programmers and information technology specialists.

    You will play a vital role in the management of the storm tide and wave monitoring data collected by the Coastal Monitoring team.

    You will also implement the QGHL Information Security Management System and manage QGHL site works including the annual maintenance plan.

    The role also requires undertaking coastal process studies and preparing technical reports.

    The Principal Scientist is responsible for leading and managing the Data Management and Information Security (DMIS) team and QGHL site works including the maintenance program.

    The position delivers high-level scientific data related to climate, coastal and disaster management and manages the intellectual property and human resources of DMIS in compliance with relevant legislation and policies.

    You will provide high-level and strategic scientific advice on coastal processes, particularly storm tide and ocean waves to internal clients, senior management, and external stakeholders.

    This position requires:


    demonstrated high-level knowledge and experience of oceanographic and coastal processes including storm tide and wave monitoring, data analysis, data management and data presentation involving analytical, research and problem-solving skills.

    demonstrated ability to lead and manage projects and teams (of internal and external stakeholders) for delivery in a complex business environment focussed on information security and data management processes.

    Building collaborative networks, demonstrated negotiating and/or persuasion skills would be highly valued.
    demonstrated ability to prepare concise technical reports and online information products for a range of media and audiences.

    high-level communication and negotiation skills, your ability to develop and sustain relationships with a wide range of customers and partners including team members and other teams, and professionally represent the department and its interests.

    understanding of Information Security Management Systems and Quality Management Systems.
    contribution to workplace equity and diversity that enriches our culture of innovation, respect and inclusion.

    Experience with the Linux operating system and programming languages such as Python, PV-Wave and Julia are highly desirable as well as a working knowledge of ISO/IEC 27001, providing requirements for an information security management system (ISMS).

    The position is based in Deagon and is full-time, however travel to other offices and for field work is required from time to time.

    To be eligible for employment in this position, you must hold a degree qualification in Science or Engineering or agreed equivalent.
