    The First Nations team is building cultural capability, trust, transparency and strengthening relationships between the QPS and First Nations communities, across Queensland. This is achieved by sharing information and developing initiatives in a collaborative approach to prevent harm and together develop a safer Queensland for everyone.

    Led by an Executive Director, our team includes First Nations members who bring extensive policing and cultural knowledge and, through their passion and lived experiences, drive transformative change.

    Taskforce Mairwar is the QPS investigation centre for the Truth-Telling and Healing Inquiry. Taskforce Maiwar will be conducting investigations across Queensland to enable the Commissioner of Police and other relevant staff to provide evidence at the Truth Telling and Healing inquiry.

    The Taskforce will work in collaboration with the QPS Truth Telling and Healing team. The Taskforce will coordinate and assign tasks for the Truth Telling and Healing Team, and regional investigators across the state. The Truth Telling and Healing Team will support the Taskforce as they will lead healing activities with First Nations peoples and communities.

    The core capability requirements for this role are:

    • Lead and manage a team of research experts in the delivery of complex investigations and reviews.
    • Prepare and provide authoritative, strategic and operational advice on historical grievances and matters of cultural hardship including the provision of both written and oral advice.
    • Conduct assigned investigations relating to complaints made against members of the Queensland Police Service in compliance with Service policies, orders and procedures.
    • Provide high level advice on key conduct investigation processes, complaints management and compliance to support planning for risk identification, reporting and escalation.
    • Participate in the development of strategic, innovative and proactive policies related to staff misconduct and ethical decision making and make recommendations for procedural or policy reforms.
    • Conduct confidential inquiries on behalf of the Service and external law enforcement agencies, government and non-government organisations.
    • Identify potential witnesses and relevance of documentary material to support claims against the Queensland Police Service and interview and gather comprehensive witness statements.
    • Communicate, consult, negotiate and resolve conflicts effectively with all levels of internal and external stakeholders to ensure consideration of issues and delivery of positive outcomes for the department.
    • Work in partnership with the QPS Truth Telling and Healing Team and provide briefings to allow them to conduct healing events with First Nations peoples and communities.

    Role Requirements:

    Technical/ Operational/ Educational experience:

    • Demonstrated experience in conducting investigations.
    • Demonstrated experience in engaging with First Nations peoples and communities regarding sensitive matters, and an understanding / application of cultural appropriate engagement.
