    In the role of Principal Engineer (Asphalt and Surfacings) you will independently provide specialist road surfacing and asphalt engineering related services and advice to facilitate the planning, procurement, design, construction and maintenance of transport infrastructure. You will also be responsible for planning, managing and undertaking research and development projects (including projects in the TMR/ARRB National Asset Centre of Excellence (NACoE) program) in order to independently develop, improve and implement road surfacing and asphalt technologies and technical documents.

    Some of your responsibilities will include:

    • Operating collaboratively or independently to apply specialist knowledge of road surfacing and asphalt engineering principles and methodologies to facilitate the planning, design, delivery, maintenance and asset management of road infrastructure.
    • Providing a complete range of consultancy services for road surfacing and asphalt technologies, and related issues.
    • Project managing and/or undertaking specialist research to develop, implement improve and/or evaluate practical engineering applications and solutions related to road surfacings and asphalt, and to maintain expert knowledge in road surfacing and asphalt technologies.
    • Providing expert technical /advice as required for technical governance activities.
    • Utilising your specialist knowledge independently.

    Requirements of the role

    You are able to demonstrate that have the following capabilities:

    • Applies specialist knowledge and skills: You are able to evidence knowledge and demonstrate strong skills in road surfacings, including in asphalt and seals, and can apply your knowledge and skills in practice to provide sound technical advice and services. You also maintain a high standard of practice in road surfacings, including in asphalt and seals.
    • Communicates effectively: You have strong written and oral communication skills enabling you to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders by tailoring your approach, medium (format) and/or content to suit the audience and your aims. You actively and attentively listen to others.
    • Manages stakeholders and relationships: You have strong stakeholder management skills to effectively build and maintain internal and external relationships, navigate complex relationships, build consensus, negotiate and manage expectations.
    • Demonstrates and provides sound governance: You are able to rigorously research and analyse relevant information to proactively identify risks to the department and the team's activities, and can evaluate possible solutions and take appropriate steps to mitigate risks. You can also develop or contribute to technical documents (e.g. specifications), develop and deliver training and undertake other implementation activities, either on your own or as part of team, as needed.
    • Drives accountability and outcomes: You are proactive and self-directed (i.e. you can initiate or decide on a course of action to achieve objectives, without needing step-by-step instructions). You work flexibly without supervision, effectively manage new and unexpected events, and demonstrate sound judgement about when to escalate issues. You demonstrate persistence in working through obstacles and plan and organise your work to achieve results.

    Mandatory qualifications and conditions:

    • A four-year Washington Accord accredited, Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) degree - or equivalent which is assessed and accepted by Engineers Australia.
    • Registration as a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) is mandatory for appointment to the position.

    o Unregistered applicants are encouraged to apply for the position, provided they are registered as a RPEQ with the Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland at the time of appointment.

    • Current holder of a C-Class Queensland driver's licence.
    • Criminal history screening will be conducted on the recommended person for the role.
