    The Role

    Do you enjoy a variety of work that is physical, creative, technical and science orientated? We are looking for motivated and self-driven Environmental Technicians or Hydrographers to join our team, based in each of our established offices in Rockhampton and Mackay. This unique position offers a blend of field and office work, combining science, engineering, the environment, data management and complex evolving technology to operate and maintain our networks of automated environmental monitoring stations.

    ALS Hydrographics is a small niche' part of the ALS Limited group of companies and is a diverse and dynamic provider of high-quality hydro-meteorological products and services to a range of clients. We are currently seeking motivated technicians to join the Queensland Operations, as part of our Rockhampton and Mackay teams. All levels of Environmental Technician or Hydrographer will be considered for these vacancies. This is an exciting opportunity to join a committed and dedicated team who continually strive to meet and exceed client expectations.
    The successful candidate will receive extensive invested formalised and in house training as part of your career development plan, which will include:

  • Enrolment and study time to complete a Diploma of Water Operations (Hydrography), typically over 3 years
  • 4WD driver training
  • One on one mentoring
  • In house systems, equipment and role specific technical training
  • The day to day
    The role of an Environmental Technician / Hydrographer is varied, and includes a range of field work, office work and project management duties. Working a Monday to Friday roster only, specific responsibilities of the role include:
  • Provide best practice Environmental Monitoring services for clients in a safe and timely manner.
  • Install, service, operate and maintain automatic environmental monitoring stations with a strict emphasis on accuracy and quality.
  • Collect environmental data from automatic monitoring stations and verify data using computer software package before supplying to clients.
  • Maintaining accurate record keeping including field observations and calibrations.
  • Undertake flow measurement in rivers, creeks and drains.
  • Undertake manual sampling activities from both surface water and groundwater, using a range of techniques with adherence to QA principles and procedures.
  • Project management, client liaison and correspondence.
  • Sound knowledge of, and adherence to, HSE principles.
  • Travel and work in remote regions of Queensland.
  • The essentials
    The ideal candidate would have the majority of the following attributes:
  • Some environmental monitoring / hydrographic experience.
  • Tertiary qualification in environmental science, water resources or similar (desirable).
  • Competent with data acquisition and hydrographic software applications necessary for effective data management and field instrumentation operation.
  • Project management experience.
  • High level attention to detail, strong organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Professional oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to work cohesively in a team environment.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Able to work in a variety of environmental conditions including short periods away from home.
  • Ability to perform manual handling tasks in a wide range of outdoor conditions.
  • Experience in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Current manual car driver's licence.
  • 4WD experience.
  • Experience with health, safety and environmental aspects of field work.
  • Ability to swim.
