    The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Principal Policy Officer to provide a critical role within Corrections and Justice Services.

    About the role

    The Strategic Policy and Investment Team in Policy Strategy and System Outcomes (PSSO) is seeking an ongoing VPS6 Principal Policy Officer.

    Reporting to the Manager, Strategic Policy and Investment, the Principal Policy Officer will be part of a small but mighty team delivering policy solutions and strategic advice across the adult custodial system.

    The Principal Policy Officer plays a critical role in leading the preparation of comprehensive and authoritative advice on a wide range of topics. The successful candidate will lead the preparation of strategic advice to Government, including budget business cases and Cabinet submissions. They will provide advice to senior executives and the Minister to help ensure the corrections system works towards its longer term vision, while recognising and responding to operational risks and opportunities.

    This position would suit someone who:

    • has experience providing high quality, strategic, influential and evidence-based advice to inform decision-making
    • has advanced conceptual, policy and analytical skills with ability to analyse complex policy issues, including where these intersect with operational needs and issues
    • has exceptional stakeholder skills including experience influencing and negotiating on complex issues
    • has experience with Victorian Government administrative, budget and Cabinet processes, including business cases and Cabinet submissions (or the ability to understand these quickly)
    • has knowledge of current policy directions within the corrections and criminal justice system (or the ability to understand these issues quickly)
    • is looking to expand their skill and knowledge set in an exciting and dynamic policy area.

    About PSSO

    Corrections and Justice Services (CJS) is responsible for the direction, management and operation of Victoria's adult corrections system, including both community and custodial corrections.

    PSSO is a business unit within CJS, is responsible for policy reform, program design and development, and strengthening engagement with service sector partners. PSSO works closely with other CJS business units to deliver a modern corrections system that is focused on human rights, rehabilitation and community safety. PSSO lives the VPS values in its work, with an emphasis on improving outcomes for people in contact with the system, and fostering a workplace culture that is kind, respectful and effective.

    About the Strategic Policy and Investment Team

    Strategic Policy and Investment is a high profile, influential team with an exciting work program over the coming year. Key priorities include leading the budget strategy for CJS, ensuring that the system has the resources to deliver the best outcomes for people in contact with the system, and providing strategic advice to the Minister and CJS executive on priority projects such as the prison network configuration.
