    The School of Nursing and Midwifery at Deakin University is ranked in the top 1% of universities globally and is one of the largest schools of nursing and midwifery in Australia based across the four University campuses; Melbourne Burwood Campus, Geelong Waterfront Campus, Warrnambool Campus and in partnership with The National Indigenous Knowledges Education Research Innovation (NIKERI) Institute located on the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus.

    Monash Health is Victoria's largest public health service. Providing safe, high-quality care to one-quarter of Melbourne's population, across the entire lifespan, from pre-birth to end-of-life. More than 22,000 staff work at over 40 care locations across south-east Melbourne, including seven hospitals and an extensive network of rehabilitation, aged care, community health and mental health facilities. Each year:

  • Providing more than 3.4 million episodes of care to the community,
  • Over 276,000 people are admitted to our hospitals,
  • Close to 220,000 people receive care in the emergency departments,
  • Performing more than 48,000 surgical procedures.
  • Deakin University and Monash Health have an established research centre, The Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research Monash Health Partnership. The purpose of this position is to provide academic and professional leadership to clinical and academic staff and students of the respective institutions, appropriate to the research focus and clinical priorities of the partners. This is in the form of nursing leadership in research programs, the development of inquiry-based research and activities to inform nursing clinical practice. The results should lead to improved outcomes for the quality and safety of patient care and higher professional recognition for both Monash Health and Deakin University and the nursing and midwifery professions.

    The Chair in Nursing (Monash Health) will report jointly to; Executive Dean, Faculty of Health, through the Head, School of Nursing and Midwifery, and to the Executive Director, Nursing & Midwifery, Monash Health.

    Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Establishing networks within Monash Health, Deakin University, the local community and the national/international nursing professional community as well as strengthening links with industry and professional groups.
  • Leading and taking part in university and health service committees, and actively contributing to the governance and collegial life of the University and Monash Health.
  • Promoting Monash Health, the School and Faculty to prospective students and relevant professional, industry and government bodies in Australia and internationally. Undertaking mentoring of more junior academic staff and clinicians.
  • Contributing to the achievement of Monash Health patient safety and quality strategic priorities through the alignment of strategic priorities within QPS.
  • Ensuring compliance of areas of responsibility with all legislative requirements and Monash Health and University policies including equity and equal opportunity.
  • Representing nursing and midwifery at Monash Health as a member of the senior nursing leadership group.
  • Providing a strong contribution to health service, university and state committees that enhance the reputation and activities of the Monash Health partnership.
  • Key selection criteria for this role:

  • PhD in a relevant field together with eligibility or registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a registered nurse
  • Demonstrable academic leadership and professional expertise in the field of nursing
  • An internationally recognised research profile and scholarly publications in the field of nursing including domestic and/or international research linkages.
  • Success in securing competitive research and/or commercial funding particularly, and pursuing opportunities to secure research funding.
  • A proven record of attracting and successfully supervising Honours, Masters and PhD students
  • Evidence of ability to build partnerships with professional, industry and government organisations to further relevant educational, research and entrepreneurial activities.
