Job no 507251 Employment type Ongoing Location Canberra Categories Executive Level 1 About the teamThe Climate Change Division provides policy and technical support to the Australian Government on climate change matters. The Division is responsible for developing and implementing Australia s domestic climate change policies. This includes developing Australia s annual national greenhouse gas accounts and emissions projections, and providing policy oversight for the Emissions Reduction Fund and the Safeguard Mechanism.An opportunity exists in the Safeguard and Industrial Policy Team, which develops policy for the Government s Safeguard Mechanism. The Safeguard Mechanism applies emissions limits, called baselines, to around 200 of Australia s largest greenhouse gas emitters. The Safeguard Mechanism covers facilities in the manufacturing, mining, oil, gas, waste and transport sectors. The team is also responsible for broader industrial sector emissions policy. Our ideal candidateThe ideal candidate will hold a tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline or commensurate qualifications and experience in economics and or data analysis have experience working with climate policies be able to resolve complex and sensitive policy and technical issues be able to make decisions and provide advice based on sound judgement, risk evaluation, high level analytical and problem-solving skills, your own expertise and an awareness of the broader environment have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and be able to explain technical and complex issues in plain language be able to develop and build relationships, work collaboratively and negotiate outcomes with internal and external stakeholders have strong analytical and data analysis skills with a strong ability to work with Excel and PowerBI, although this is not essential have experience managing, developing and supporting staff have experience managing strategic direction and competing priorities to achieve timely results. What you will doThe successful candidate will lead on specific projects undertaking qualitative and quantitative analysis to inform government climate policy manage junior staff, consultants and consultancy projects engage and present to a range of stakeholders across the Department and with other government agencies and industry representatives assist in calculating industry average emissions intensity values and precisely define outputs produced at Safeguard-covered facilities develop and assist the Minister in making Commonwealth legislation help shape the policy settings for the Safeguard Mechanism advise the Minister on industrial sector emissions issues and work with other teams in the division and across Government on climate policy issues. EligibilityTo be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.This position requires a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level. NotesRelevant educational background and work experience is highly desirable.
