Position Summary

Responsible for assigned activities within Project Engineering on the Western Sydney Airport project. Applies broad knowledge of engineering principles and practices to project engineering in the management, assessment and support of design engineering activities undertaken by

· the Procurement team in developing tender documentation for the Structural Engineering scopes related to the various D&C Contract and assessing D&C Contract tenders for the project;

· the D&C Contractor preparing detailed designs based on the Technical Service Providers’ (TSP’s) reference designs and delivering the works on site in accordance with those designs.

Makes decisions concerning engineering problems associated with Structural design across all main works packages. Represents the discipline on the project and with the client as directed to manage resolution of all engineering questions that arise on the across all main works packages.

Work Location : Badgerys Creek, South-Western Sydney area.

Job Dimensions

A. Supervision Received

  • Reports to the Project Engineering Lead.
  • Receives operational supervision and technical guidance from the various Package Manager.
  • Objectives are defined and results are subject to supervisory review.
  • B. Contact

  • Maintains contacts, as directed and required, with Client Representatives, Technical Service Providers, D&C contractor representatives, Representatives of the Project Manager (Definition) team which is managing the concept design process, other personnel within the Delivery Partner Team, appropriate field personnel and other disciplines.
  • Responsibilities

  • Assists the procurement team with the development of tender documents, management of the tendering process and evaluation of relevant sections of tender submissions received from potential D&C contractors for the assigned package.
  • Manages the D&C contractor in preparing compliant, constructable and value engineered designs for the assigned package.
  • Manages the design review and approval processes for the assigned package’s designs from 30% to 100% completion
  • Coordinates and interfaces as directed with the day-to-day technical work of discipline engineers, and field supervision.
  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to upper management.
  • Facilitates technical discussions with third parties (client, designers, suppliers, regulators etc.).
  • Prepares or oversees the preparation of discipline work plans in accordance with project scope, schedule and budget, and manages implementation, performance and reporting.
  •  Attends regular progress meetings with the D&C contractor to ensure ongoing compliance of the D&C contractor’s work with the project program, all applicable technical requirements as well as obligations for value engineering, buildability, safety in design, security, etc.
  • Manages requests for information and design change requests related to the assigned package.
  • Coordinates assigned engineering work with other project groups.
  • Mentors engineers, by providing appropriate on-the-job training for their professional development.

  • Job Knowledge

  • Knowledge of systems, calculations, equipment, applications of methods, plant layouts, materials, and programs for preparation of analyses and development of Structural Engineering deliverables.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical and cost issues related to selection of Structural design features.
  • Knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Experience in aviation industry or buildings design and construction industry
  • Knowledge of precedents in the Structural Engineering discipline and of principles and practices of related disciplines.
  • Knowledge of related construction practices and the economics involved.
  • Broad knowledge of industry/regulatory codes, standards and design criteria pertinent to Structural Engineering and complex buildings scopes of work.
  • Good knowledge of procedures, design guides, application programs and administrative practices used on major projects in the Australian construction industry.
  • Preferable experience in design and construction of structures associated with terminal/facilities or large commercial type buildings.
  • The above is normally acquired through:

  • A recognised degree in an engineering or scientific discipline, from an accredited college or university, AND
  • At least 13 years of broad progressive work experience in design engineering, or other relevant types of engineering associated with major building and infrastructure design and construction projects.
