Summary position

The Coaching Director manages the provision of coaching support, development, education and evaluation of all Fitzroy Football Club (FFC) coaches and the development and support of player leadership groups. They provide advice and recommendations to the FFC Board on the ongoing development and operations of the FFC Football Department.

The Coaching Director is expected to contribute to and represent the Fitzroy Football Club at all times in line with the Club’s positive, collaborative, respectful culture and maintain a strict confidentiality with regard to the Club’s Board operations and decision making. They follow and uphold all relevant FFC, Good Sports and VAFA policies and guidelines (e.g. VAFA Amateur Status and Integrity Guidelines and FFC Spectator Code of Conduct, Alcohol Management Policy and Media and Social Media guidelines).

Key selection criteria

  • Experience in coaching or as coaching director/coordinator at a football club or other relevant setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • A passion for football and its place in the community.
  • Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the recruitment of coaches.
  • Coordinate the development of all coaches.
  • In conjunction with the coaches, oversee broader strategies for player training, development, recruitment, retention and injury management and rehabilitation.
  • Liaise with all coaches, providing regular feedback on training and match day.
  • Coordinate regular individual meetings with coaches.
  • Facilitate and chair monthly meetings involving all coaches, the Director, Football Operations and Director, Player Recruitment and Wellbeing and, from time to time, other meetings by invitation and as agreed with the Club Board and/or Director Football Operations.
  • Develop strong links with coaches and relevant committee personnel from Fitzroy Junior Football Club (FJFC), with a focus on U17 and Youth Girls’ teams.
  • Develop stronger pathways into FFC for FJFC ‘graduates’, in particular working with the FFC U19 and Women’s coaches to foster and grow the relationship with FJFC.
  • Coordinate coaches’ required accreditations.
  • Attend an agreed number of FFC Board meetings each season.
  • In conjunction with the Director, Football Operations and Director, Player Recruitment and Wellbeing, develop and manage the football department annual budget.
  • In consultation with the coaches and players, oversee the development of player leadership frameworks and programs within FFC.
  • Be the key contact/conduit to the FFC Board on all matters related to player conduct and have a key role – in consultation with coaches and player leadership groups – on player participation in the development of FFC strategic plans and policies.
  • Seek approval of the Director Football Operations (and through them) the Director Budget and Finance for endorsement by the FFC Board for expenditure of FFC funds.
