The Role
Air Force Training Group (AFTG) exists to deliver essential, effective and efficient education and training and to promote the RAAF to meet Air Force needs. The Group commands training units located across Australia and manages a large student population within the Air Force training continuum. As the Group Safety Advisor for AFTG, your job will be to manage the Workplace Health and Safety function on behalf of the Commander.

You will be accountable, under broad direction, to undertake complex Work Health and Safety activities in support of the Safety Management System. You will use your initiative and experience to analyse complex and dynamic tasks, and to provide succinct and timely advice to the chain of command. You will manage competing priorities to best meet organisational outcomes. You will be responsible for ensuring conformance with relevant WH&S requirements across a range of domains including Radiation Safety, Explosive Ordnance Safety and mandated occurrence reporting requirements. You will be expected and supported to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.

Your duties will include:

  • Management of complex safety investigations
  • Conduct of safety Audits in support of the Quality Program
  • Liaison with external agencies and regulatory bodies
  • Preparation of Risk Assessments for complex activities
  • Implementation of safety related management initiatives

  • About our Team
    You will work as part of a small team within the Directorate of Logistic Capability with overall responsibility for Safety Management across the Aviation and Workplace Health domains. This team includes subject matter experts in aviation safety and operational airworthiness, quality management and auditing. You will report to the AFTG Safety Manager, normally an aircrew officer at the Wing Commander (APS Executive Level 1 equivalent) level. The nature of the role offers potential for flexible working arrangements and support for ongoing education and professional development.

    You will manage a network of WH&S advisors across various locations, providing guidance and direction where required. You will proactively engage with internal and external stakeholders, identifying expectations and concerns to achieve business outcomes. In support of these aims, your role will occasionally require interstate travel for short periods. 

    Our Ideal Candidate
    As the ideal candidate you will have a sophisticated understanding of Workplace Health and Safety Legislation and Regulation combined with a passion for ensuring the safety of workers. Ideally, you will have relevant undergraduate/post-graduate qualifications in the safety management discipline reinforced by pertinent work experience. You will be a clear and succinct communicator with a good grasp of the ’big picture’ as well as an eye for detail. You will be outcome focused with a track record of producing high quality results in a timely manner. You will be equally comfortable working as part of a team or in a leadership and mentoring role. You will be able to analyse and succinctly report on large data sets as well as use the results of your analysis to synthesis innovative solutions to complex problems.
