The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for Staff Specialist – Anatomical Pathology vacancy at Royal Hobart Hospital.

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania, and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania School of Medicine. The Hospital provides most specialist medical services for the region or state.

The Department of Anatomical Pathology is a Nata Accredited Laboratory which includes Histopathology, Cytopathology and mortuary. 

  • Histopathology provides a fully comprehensive diagnostic histology service to the Royal Hobart Hospital and the southern Tasmanian GP community. The Department is the state referral laboratory for renal pathology and is able to provide a wide range of expertise to include gastrointestinal; breast; skin; urological; ear, nose and throat; and lymph node pathology.
  • Cytopathology provides a fully comprehensive cytology service, including a Fine Needle Aspirate service, to the Royal Hobart Hospital, and its client GPs. The department is the main state referral laboratory for Tasmanian public health screening of Pap smears.
  • The mortuary facility is shared with the State-wide Forensic Medical Service. Providing a fully comprehensive autopsy service including paediatric and perinatal.
  • Salary

    A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority. 

    Classification

    Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2017

  • Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.

    Fixed term part time day work (with on-call), working 38 hours per fortnight commencing as soon as possible until 31 December 2021.

    Duties

    The Staff Specialist – Anatomical Pathology will:

  • Provide a diagnostic service in Anatomical Pathology for inpatients and outpatients of the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).
  • Be involved with undergraduate teaching and post graduate teaching.
  • Undertake research and quality improvement activities. 
  • Essential Requirements

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty
  • The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
    1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
    a) Crimes of Violence
    b) Sex Related Offences
    c) Serious Drug Offences
    d) Crimes involving dishonesty
    2. Identification check
    3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check

    Desirable Requirements

  • Consultant Pathologist with Fellow of Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA) or relevant equivalent qualification
  • Applicants should note that, for a period of 12 months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time and part time vacancies.
