The Chief Executive Officers of the Department of Education, Catholic Education Western Australia and the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia have recently formed the Cross Sectoral Working Group for Student Mental Health and Wellbeing.

This working group is made up of experienced school leaders from all three sectors and other key stakeholders and experts in the areas of mental health and wellbeing. The purpose of the working group is to:

drive agreed mental health priorities, objectives and targets across the three sectors;

develop agreed minimum training standards for staff relating to student mental health;

develop shared training resources and materials; and

ensure there is a focus on the mental health and wellbeing needs of students in remote Aboriginal communities.

The Cross Sectoral Working Group for Student Mental Health and Wellbeing is chaired by the Chief Psychologist of the Department of Education.

The Working Group is seeking an experienced and results-driven Level 7 public servant, who will be based at the Department’s Statewide Services Centre, to drive both the strategic and operational aspects of the group’s work. This position also acts as the Executive Officer when the group meets.

The position will require an understanding of contemporary mental health and wellbeing issues being experienced by Western Australian young people, including Aboriginal young people, and an ability to bring collective experience together to develop network, policy, program, and professional learning solutions to the issues identified. 

The successful applicant will facilitate a five-year cross sectoral plan for student mental health and wellbeing and be responsible for coordinating the strategies identified by the plan for implementation and monitoring.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our branch for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

Substantial knowledge and understanding of contemporary student wellbeing and mental health issues and associated programs and strategies that support the wellbeing and positive mental health of Western Australian young people.

Substantial experience and expertise in managing strategic projects and project management systems and tools in order to meet project outcomes.

Substantial experience in the planning, analysis, development and evaluation of project and program initiatives in a complex organisation.

Highly developed written and verbal communication skills with an ability to liaise, consult and negotiate effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Highly developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to convey ideas persuasively and develop/foster strategic relationships to achieve identified outcomes.

Highly developed conceptual, analytical and problem solving skills and a proven ability to provide innovative thinking to identify solutions to complex problems.

ELIGIBILITY AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Employees will be required to:

provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy

obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance before commencing employment

obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check

complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;

complete any training specific to this role required by Department policy; and

complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
