    The Technical Lead Secure Data Services is responsible for leading the development, delivery, and maintenance of secure research data services for UNSW. The role will maintain the existing secure data services and work closely with the Application Security Lead, Cyber Security, Data Governance, Solution and Enterprise Architects, Privacy, Technology team, UNSW Division of Research and Enterprise to co-design and develop fit-for-purpose sustainable alternatives/new solutions for continuous improvement. The Technical Lead Secure Data Services will actively contribute to defining the way secure research data services will be established and operate within the university. It includes achieving and maintaining standards-based certifications and ensuring high levels of uptake and engagement with the service. The role will offer advice and direction to researchers on the appropriate selection and utilisation of secure data services. Additionally, the Technical Lead will promote awareness of the University's internal and external data management environment to address emerging Cyber Security threats. This includes identifying areas for improvement in data management practices and recommending ways to address potential threats. The incumbent will maintain knowledge currency in application of emerging/changing technology, compliance, and legal and security practices while maintaining a high volume of work with tight deadlines. The role reports to Technology Manager and has no direct reports.

    Accountabilities:

  • Lead the development and implementation of secure data life cycle practices and services to ensure that Highly Sensitive or Sensitive research data is stored and used in accordance with relevant UNSW Policies and broader Research compliance obligations and best practice.
  • Provide expert guidance and leadership for secure data storage, analysis and life cycle management practices and their adoption and embed secure data practices into IT and research groups across UNSW.
  • Collaborate with relevant areas such as Cyber Security, Data Governance, UNSW Legal, Enterprise and Domain Solution Architects, to establish and advance sustainable secure data processes, platforms, tools, including monitoring and hands-on setup of end-to-end services
  • Contribute to the development of standards, guidelines and proactively identify data life cycle management improvement opportunities to uplift capabilities.
  • Develop and deliver training with respect to secure data life cycle management that guides colleagues and stakeholders in the Research-domain through the uplift and into the embedding of these practices.
    • Mentor and support Research-domain colleagues and stakeholders to develop the technical skills and mindset that facilitates the secure data life cycle management uplift.
  • Support independent or standard-based certifications audits/compliance activities for secure data services, including statutory audits by the Audit Office of NSW.
  • Continually stay up to date and aware of legal, regulatory compliance and contractual obligations that are relevant to the University's management of Research data.
  • Promote awareness of the University's internal and external environment for emerging threats to Research data security.
  • Develop and improve metrics that drive secure data life cycle management practices and outcomes.

  • Ensure hazards and risks psychosocial and physical are identified and controlled for tasks, projects, and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.
  • Skills and Experience:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification and 5+ years software engineering experience, with at least two years in an application data security and lifecycle management role, or equivalent competence through education, training, and experience.
  • In-depth understanding of the most common data security risks and demonstrated experience in secure data life cycle management practices and tooling.
  • Hands-on experience in designing, implementing, and managing secure data life cycle management practices and tooling, preferably in a research context, complying with the relevant data security standards and compliance frameworks (such as Australian Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles described, US Government Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA ), ISO27001, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience of architecture and security concerns specific to Research data storage and management technologies, such as Cloud Storage in AWS (such as S3, EBS, FSx, DynamoDB, Lake Formation, Kinesis, etc.) and/or Azure (such as Azure SQL, Azure Cosmos DB, Microsoft Defender for Storage and SQL, Azure Blob and File Storage, etc.), and/or Data Centre Hardware Storage solutions .
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex requirements into solution delivery.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills, including the ability to structure and articulate messages in written and verbal form, develop effective relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels with advanced and a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
  • Demonstrated success working effectively and collaboratively on initiatives with a range of people at different levels within an organisation.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
