    The Transition Branch delivers policy, program and services, and works closely with a range of external and inter-departmental stakeholders to progress its work. It is responsible for:

    • Veteran employment policy;
    • Transition policy
    • Delivery of the Veteran Employment Program, including
      • the Prime Minister's National Veteran Employment Awards
      • Veteran Employment Commitment
      • Employer Support
    • Veteran support officers – delivery of education and support for ADF members

    As an Assistant Director with a focus on policy or program activity you will be responsible for managing and delivering on packages of work that contribute to shaping the transition experience for veterans and families, as part of the Transition Branch strategic and business plan.

    To succeed in this role, you will draw on a sound understanding of policy development and program delivery, and how it applies to veteran issues or be able to quickly acquire an understanding.

    Assistant Directors in the Deputy President Group are responsible for developing and implementing new policy proposals and challenging pre-existing policies to improve the veteran experience. In addition, these roles may also drive change through the delivery of programs or service delivery. These roles are instrumental in driving change across DVA. Successful applicants will be passionate about improving services for veterans, and will need to have strong oral and written communication skills, the ability to support productive working relationships, and build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Successful applicants will need to work as a team player delivering to short timeframes, during peak periods.

    An understanding of the veteran support system as it sits as part of broader government services would be an advantage, as would experience in costing new policy proposals. You will need to be curious and flexible and able to thrive in a rapidly-changing environment. This role with have some required overnight travel and the successful candidate will need to be flexible and able to undertake overnight travel as required.

    Duties

    • Lead a team, including supporting development, managing performance and contributing to the management of the section and the branch;
    • Provide high quality written and verbal policy advice to the Government, Minister and Executive in relation to veterans' issues, including health and mental health, transition initiatives and grant programs, and drafting associated documents including ministerial and executive submissions and correspondence;
    • Interpret and draft policy relevant to the Deputy President Group and develop new policy proposals, including policy costings;
    • Analyse and provide technical advice, including using health, social and economic data;
    • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
    • Prioritise and use organisational skills to meet deadlines, manage competing tasks and demonstrated initiative and problem solving skills.
    • Manage work using project principles, including planning and scheduling.
    • Apply procurement and contract management skills.
    • Have the flexibility to undertake overnight travel as required

    Eligibility

    • Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS).
    • All applicants external to DVA offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a pre-engagement screening check, even if they have a security clearance. The screening check is conducted in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.

    Mandatory Requirements

    • Currently hold and the ability to maintain a full unrestricted and valid Australian Driver's Licence
    • Currently hold or the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government Security Vetting Agency - Baseline Security Clearance
