    The occupant of this position is a member of the Operational Technology and Engineering (OT&E) Section. The role of the OT&E Section is to ensure the development, delivery and operation of measurement equipment and systems meet the Bureau's performance and functional requirements. This includes the following sensors/networks:

    • Radar and Wind Profilers
    • Automatic Weather Stations
    • Solar Radiation
    • Upper Air
    • Flood Warning
    • Sea Level
    • Aircraft Based Observations
    Operational Technology and Engineering is made up of a diverse team of specialists and engineers responsible for the development and design of engineering and technological solutions, incorporating level three support, on a range of technologies spanning from radars to rainfall stations, drifting buoys to dedicated observations and satellites to ships at sea to meet business needs.

    This position focuses on the management and operation of the Engineering Maintenance Support Centre (EMSC). EMSC is a workshop facility co-located with the Bureau of Meteorology Training Centre (BMTC) in Broadmeadows. EMSC is primarily responsible for the repair and overhaul of the rotable spares and equipment for much of the Bureau's observations network, either in-house or by external contractors. Additionally, the facility directly supports OTE activities, other Observing Systems and Operations teams, Finance and Supply and BMTC.

    The key duties of the position include:

    The successful candidate will have responsibility to ensure the Bureau of Meteorology's Observations Network meets the Bureau's current and future needs. To deliver this, the position holder will be broadly responsible to undertake the following duties:

  • A demonstrated understanding of all aspects of the Observations Network equipment, including operation, maintenance and interaction/communication with other Bureau systems.
  • Ability to provide phone and remote support to Regional Resources to assist them in maintenance and trouble shooting.
  • Capability to manage Operational/Technical Staff to keep the Fielded Equipment maintained and otherwise operating to meet User Requirements.
  • Translate and apply high level goals and outcomes, identifying issues and uncertainties and incorporate these into advice, planning, decision making and implementation.
  • Availability to undertake occasional domestic travel on an ad-hoc basis to facilitate maintenance of various observations equipment.
  • Work collaboratively, communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and influence the work of teams.
  • Exercise Financial Delegation in accordance with Bureau Policies including holding a Commonwealth Government Credit Card.
  • Motivate and Mentor technical staff, aligning complementary skills and allocate resources in a manner that delivers results.
  • Evaluate and ensure that the delivered equipment and systems meet requirements and legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks.
  • Evaluate activities to understand critical factors for success and engage in continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Lead and ensure safety aspects of Bureau equipment and systems are considered and incorporated.
  • Comply with all Bureau Work Health and Safety Policies and procedures. Take reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of employees, contractors and visitors who may be affected by your actions and systems of work.
  • Participate in ensuring the quality and effectiveness of products and services and the ongoing development, implementation and continual improvement of the quality management system to achieve and maintain the ongoing certification of compliance with the ISO 9001 quality management Standard.
  • Conduct all activities associated with the position in accordance with the Technical Authority issue to them.
  • A degree or diploma of an Australian educational institution, or a comparable overseas qualification, which is appropriate to the duties; OR other comparable qualifications, which are appropriate to the duties.
