    About us

    The Department of Government Services (DGS) was established on 1 January 2023 to improve everyone's experience of doing business and interacting with the Victorian government. We bring important day-to-day services together in one department to make things easy and seamless for Victorians and businesses. We are doing this by connecting and digitising our systems and platforms across state and local government as well as streamlining our corporate and procurement services.

    About the role

    The Financial Accountant is a key contributor to the completion of financial reporting requirements including the annual financial statements and monthly, quarterly, mid-year and annual reporting for whole of government consolidations, and related financial analysis.

    Key accountabilities include:

    • Preparing financial reports including annual financial statements and reports for consolidation into whole of government financial reports, and analysis as requested by the Chief Financial Officer and other managers;
    • Providing accounting advice to financial and non-financial staff, including management across DTF on the interpretation and application of general accounting concepts and practices, including relevant accounting standards and Financial Reporting Directions;
    • Assisting with the preparation of various other reports including the audit committee reports, annual Fringe Benefits Tax returns and monthly Business Activity Statements.

    About you

    To be considered for the role, you must be able to demonstrate:

    • Well-developed conceptual and analytical abilities, including demonstrated ability to prepare and present sound advice, reconciliations and reports, supported by robust analysis and interpretation of data.
    • Extensive knowledge of, and experience with the interpretation and application of Australian accounting standards and practices and the preparation of fringe benefits tax returns and business activity statements.
    • Well-developed interpersonal, written communication, consultation and negotiation skills, including the ability to liaise with and influence clients and stakeholders at all levels, and the ability to deliver presentations and training to finance and non-finance staff.
    • Expertise in the application of a variety of PC applications including MS Excel and MS Access

    Mandatory requirements

    • Extensive experience with all aspects of financial reporting, including application of Australian accounting standards, account reconciliations and in the use of a variety of relevant ICT applications.
    • A relevant tertiary qualification is required, preferably with a major in accounting.
    • Membership of relevant professional association desirable.
